The images in the portfolio section evolved from my recent month-long
stay as an Artist in Residence at the Jentel Foundation in Banner,
Wyoming ,as well as from my travels to New Mexico, Colorado, Utah,
Yellowstone, and the Grand Tetons on route to the residency. I used
the time, space and place to reflect on my intimate and sometimes
intense relationship between my inner and outer worlds.
I got my kicks, not on route 66, but by taking Pierre, my digital
camera, out for a walk. Upon returning to the studio, I downloaded
photographs of my adventures, and printed them onto various fabrics
that I hand fed into my inkjet printer.
At Jentel, I began to experiment with painting
the fabric before printing, as well as with printing on sheer fabrics
for a layering effect. My next step uses more traditional craft
techniques such as piecing, quilting and hand embroidery and the
final embellishments, everything from beads to bottle caps, is
like the icing on the cake. My goal is to creatively integrate
technology and tradition, craftsmanship and art, meaning and metaphor,
so that the final result is much more than the sum of it’s
parts.
The idea that I had any artistic talent was kept secret for the
first 38 years of my life. In my 25 year quest as a craftsperson
,artist, and soul-searcher, a silent voice has been slowly revealing
herself. And now, my involvement with my creative and divine feminine
sensibilities, as well as my love affair with fabric, quilting, stitching,
photography, surface design, teaching, traveling, meditation and
especially with nature, has brought me closer to my own best kept
secrets. The more I become transparent and intimate (into-me-see),the
more I hope a window will open so that the person who views my work
might discover their own best kept secrets. |
